Finding some great movies in CeX! (31/08/2024)

Hello fellas!
I think it's time for yet another episode of showing you what movies I bought in CeX, and this time I've got some really interesting stuff!
Let's take a look!

Falling asleep on the way

Getting to the city this time was a weird experience.
I guess I hadn't slept much that night, because through all the way to the city I kept falling asleep, even as I was walking!
One time, I even almost fell to the ground, so I decided to take a rest on a bench and then continue on my way. Eventually, I decided it'd be a good idea to just take a bus the rest the way.

Before hopping on the bus tho, I did find a few unusual things, as always!

Okay, excuse the weirdly cropped photo, but check out that busted car!
I had never noticed it being there before, yet it must've been abandoned for a while now, given its state. I wonder what happened to it?
Anyways, here's a cool photo of the river:

Okay, okay, I know, it looks like crap. But hey, I have to save up on server space, and as a bonus, I'm not using much of your bandwidth! I'm sure that's a huge concern for you...

After getting past the river and actually arriving at the city, I was feeling quite thirsty and picked up a Monster Energy, as a reference to ObsCure, which unfortunately wasn't as cold as I expected, but, it did the job.

One last cool thing I saw was a car with a license plate that ended with "CRT". I wonder if the owner is carrying one of those in the trunk?

The movies

Ju-on

Well, after that I finally got on the bus and went to CeX. Let's see what I got, starting with: Ju-On!

But wait, don't I already own this movie?
That is exactly what I thought when I saw it, but the boxart was different! Well, before going to the counter, I did some research on my phone, and it turns out, this is actually the first (full-length) movie in the Ju-On franchise!..
Well, at least, I think it is, I'm not actually sure, this franchise is very confusing.
I believe there are two short films that came out before this one, then there's this one, which was released directly to video, then a sequel, which was also direct to video, and finally, the proper theatrical releases of The Grudge and The Grudge 2, which are the ones most people know.

Well, okay, I think most people aren't even familiar with the original Japanese versions of these films, but rather, the American remakes, but that's besides the point.

This is a 2003 release by De A Planeta, whom almost released the first theatrical movie, The Grudge, a couple months later. Both films seem to have been licensed, or perhaps the master was provided, by a company named "Orient Express", but I can't find any info about them.
The film actually advertises the upcoming DVD of the first theatrical film (which, confusingly enough, they named "La Maldición" over here, while this movie was called "Ju-On (La Maldición)". No wonder I got the two mixed up) in the "Other titles" menu.
Aside from that plus a few more trailers for other movies, the only extras here are a trailer, a credits sheet, and thankfully, a dubbing sheet, which is pretty cool to have. Lauren Films and De A Planet did this quite often.
I also quite like the animated menu.

Unfortunately, the video quality leaves a lot to be desired, it seems they didn't use a very good master, I guess they just did a straight recording of the original video release of the movie.

Dragon Rapide

This is a Spanish historical film that depicts the events leading up to the Civil War, being named after a British airplane that played a key role in the events the movie portrays.
Which, I believe, covers the events after the 1936 elections, to just before the start of the war, but I haven't watched the movie yet, so I'm not quite sure.

I had actually already seen this movie quite a few times for a few months now at CeX, but I had never decided to grab it until now, mainly because it was available in FlixOlé, so I thought, hey, if I wanna watch it, it's available there... but you know this stuff works.
I don't like relying on streaming services, and this is actually the only one I pay for, because it mainly features obscure Spanish and Italian horror films, which is the kind of stuff I'm into, and some of my family members use it rather often.
But nothing in these services lasts forever (well, actually, I think for this movie specifically, they have a permanent license, but who's to say the service itself won't disappear one day?), so I thought it'd be a good idea to get a physical copy of it, specially since it was rather cheap and the packaging looked nice.

This is a Suevia Films release, and I think it might be a bootleg, since it doesn't have a legal deposit anywhere in the box or the disc, but I'm not completely sure.
I think Suevia has made some bootleg releases, mainly of older films like The Hunchback of Notre Drame (the one with Lon Chaney... the original Lon Chaney), but honestly, I'm not too bothered by it, their releases are always decently made.
They have cool animated menus, a decent amount of extras, and the masters aren't too awful... can't say the same about a certain other modern bootleger... ahem. That's a story for another day...

This release is actually quite feature rich all things considered, it has a documentary about the war, credits and biographies as usual, a little sypnosis, and a Suevia Films catalog, which, in the case of other DVD releases, is usually a physical mini-booklet with their movies. Not in this case, tho.
As for the image quality of the movie, it's fine. There's a little wasted space around the borders, but nothing too bad, and since it's in 4:3 we don't have to worry about any non-anamorphic shenanigans...

Pulse (by Wes Craven)

Unfortunately, this is not the original Japanese Pulse (Kairo), which is the one I actually want to watch, as it was recommended to me a while ago by some online stranger who showed me a clip from the beginning of the movie and it instantly drew me in. I've been wanting to get a DVD of it for a while but, unfortunately, I have yet to find one. Oh well, maybe one day.

Anyways, I ended up picking this up anyways because... well, it IS a Wes Craven movie, so it's gotta be at least somewhat good, right?

Well uh, I have no idea, I haven't watched it yet! But it does actually look rather interesting, apparently it's about ghosts that haunt you through your network... err, is the original movie's plot about this, too?
Honestly, I don't get the US' obsession with remaking foreign movies just for the sake of it. It may be good in this case, being made by Wes Craven, but we'll have to see.

This is a release by De A Planeta, which is to be expected as they seemed to specialize in Japanese horror films back in the day. Although, this technically isn't one, so uhhhh does it count?
This one has a relatively unique anti-piracy ad, I don't think I've seen it on any other DVD. As for the actual contents of the DVD, it's actually pretty good!

Okay, it doesn't actually have extras in the sense of like, behind the scenes footage and whatnot, but still, the animated menus are very stylized and cool (while still being easy to navigate, which is nice).
It has the usual filmographies, credits list, and a dubbing sheet which I always like to see, plus a trailer which... oddly enough, seems to be in the wrong aspect ratio, and the standard "Other titles" section, which also has trailers for each of the movies featured in it.
Again, fairly standard stuff for these guys, but I like it.

As for the movie's quality... it's alright. A bit too compressed and the colors are a bit too washed out, but it's not too bad, a lot of more "modern" movies look like that on DVD.

A Good Day to Die Hard

I'm actually a big fan of the original Die Hard trilogy, they're some really fun movies. But I haven't actually the fourth and fifth movies, and I have heard the weren't that good.
Still, when I saw this one at CeX for cheap, I decided to snatch it, I'm sure it can't be THAT bad, right?

Now, looking at this image, you're probably wondering. What's a "La Jungla"?
Well, you see, the original Die Hard was titled "La Jungla de Cristal", which literally translates to "The Glass Jungle". Why was this the case?
Well, uhh... I... guess the building that the movie takes place in, is supposed to be like a jungle made out of glass. I dunno, but it's a cool title, so it works for me.

Anyways, the sequels actually kept this title, although, with the exception of the third movie, shortening it to "La Jungla", which I think works fine.

I haven't watched the 4th movie as I said, so I'll probably hold off this one until I can find a DVD of La Jungla 4.0.

This DVD is a direct 20th Century Fox release, and it's... kindda lame.
It has an... interesting advertisement for Blu-Ray at the start of the disc, which is always funny to see because they're trying to show me the better image quality of Blu-Ray movies... on a DVD, but asides from that... it has an animated intro with clips from the movie, and a bunch of deleted scenes as extras, which is very nice.
But the presentation is really awful. The main menu is just a still image of the movie, and the other menus are rather simple.

At least the image quality is good, but otherwise, this is a kind of lackluster release. Compared to our own DVD publishers, the major film distributors always leave a lot to be desired...

Van Helsing

I only really started being interested in classic Universal monster movies rather recently, but honestly, since I first watched the original (Spanish) Drácula, I've been very fascinated by them.
They may not be scary anymore, at least, not to my brain, but these are some really fun movies with some really memorable monsters. It's kind of fascinating seeing the journeys of some of these monsters, I think my favourite of all of them is Lon Chaney's Wolfman. There's just something about the make-up they used, the actors that reappear in most of the movies, the sort of artsy and simplistic sets... they really are a lot of fun.

At some point, I found out that the movie responsible for the releases of the DVDs of these classic movies that I bought, was Van Helsing, which I had only heard about in passing.

Honestly, I didn't have much interest in this movie. It kindda looked like some generic early 2000's CGIfest, but, since it was partly responsible for me getting to watch Universal's classic movies, and because I found it for just 1€ in CeX, I decided to grab it.
Actually looking at the case and stuff, it's starting to sound a little more interesting, so I may actually give it a watch when I have some time.

And, check this out! This DVD came with a phamplet advertising other things, like the aforementioned collection of classic Universal monster movies, which I of course already own (well, kind of, I own the legacy collections of Drácula, Frankenstein and the Wolfman, not any of the other stuff, and specially not those busts), and also Riddick, a movie that I got for free... next to some trash bins, plus an prequel to Van Helsing and another animated movie that I think is supposed to link this Riddick movie and Pitch Black, whatever that is.

It really seems like they wanted these to turn into big media franchises, but I don't think that was really the case for any of these.

The actual DVD itself is like, really good. It has a lot of content and the presentation is great, the menus are animated and really cool, and there's really a lot of things to play around with here.
There's even some stuff specifically to be executed on a PC, but I haven't been able to test it out.
The quality of the movie itself is good, though unfortunately this is one of those movies that's so dark you can barely fucking see it... oh well.

I'd recommend checking out the extras of this DVD if you can find them, it has a lot of things like behind the scenes footage, a tour of Drácula's castle, commentaries and the like. You can tell they put a lot of effort and love into this movie and its home media releases...

Judge Dredd

This is a movie that I had been meaning to watch for a while now, actually, and a couple weeks back I saw it in CeX but didn't buy it, and now it's the time to fix that mistake!

I first heard of Judge Dredd a few years back, when I saw a comparison video with its ending sequence and Resident Evil's ending sequence. Apparently it's an adaption of a comic book series, but of course, I don't read comics, so I wouldn't know!
I must say, it does look like a rather interesting movie, it reminds me of other movies like Johnny Mnemonic, which is a good thing because that was a fun movie.

This is a Lauren Films release, and these guys usually do make good releases... not this time tho, this one sucks unfortunately.
The first interesting thing you'll notice about it is that it says "Special Kiosk Edition" at the bottom, so I'm guessing this release was meant specifically for that, kiosks, which is kindda cool to own I think.
That aside, you'd think this would be a rather standard Lauren release, it has filmographies, credits listing, a dubbing list, the usual, but, there's one big problem...

It's in 4:3! Why?! Hell, you know what's even worse? The DVD comes with a trailer for the movie, and the fucking trailer is in 16:9! What the hell?

Sure, I don't mind watching movies in 4:3... but some of them don't work very well in that format, and this is one of them. Plus, it's a DVD, why would you put a movie in 4:3 on a DVD?
On tape, it makes sense, but here, not so much. So unfortunately, although it's nice to own the movie, this isn't a very good release.

House of the Dead

Ah, the infamous Uwe Bolt movie...

I don't think I've ever heard a single good thing about this movie, not even once. Hell, I don't think I've ever heard a single thing about any of his movies, but specially not this one.
I haven't watched it, but apparently it literally has nothing to do with the games, aside from featuring random clips from some of them... for whatever reason.

When I first saw the movie in CeX I wasn't going to buy it, but honestly, it was priced at 2,50€ and I kindda wanted to watch some new zombie movies, so I decided to bit the bullet and grab it.
Even if it's a really bad movie, it'll probably be entertaining. Hell, I think that everything with zombies in it is, but I guess we'll see.

This is a Manga Films release, and, oddly enough, it's a really good one!

The menus are pretty cool and stylized, and it comes with a lot of extras, including trailers for other movies, filmographies, credits lists, behind the scenes footage, and even interviews dubbed into Spanish! This is super cool.
And the film itself looks rather nice, so I think this is a very good release, I'd totally recommend it.

The Langoliers

And finally, the movie that took the most consideration to buy, because it was the most expensive at 10€... The Langoliers.

I used to watch this movie, or, well, technically, mini-series, as a kid all the time, it was a lot of fun and had very memorable characters. So, when I saw it in Cex, I couldn't really pass on the opportunity...

I was very excited to try this movie out at home and... well, I was rather disappointed.
Okay, the film itself looks fine and all... but this isn't the dub I remember!

I did some research and apparently, the movie was first released on VHS, on two tapes, and had the dub that I remember. It actually wasn't released on TV until later over here, and that's when it got a different dub, and that's the one that was put on this disc apparently.
So that's very disappointing... it's not a deal breaker, I mean, the other dub is fine... but I'd really like to watch the movie in its original dub from my childhood.

As for the release itself... it's fine, I guess.
It doesn't really have any extras, which I can understand given how much space the film probably takes. Still, it would've been nice to at least get some filmographies or something, but the major film distributors don't usually do that.
The quality of the film itself is fine enough, tho it does seem to be a bit blurry, specially when things are moving, but I guess that's a sacrifice you have to make to fit a 3 hour movie in a single DVD.
They should've used two discs! At least it's a dual layer DVD...

Anyways, that's it for today! Sorry that it took so long to release this, I have a few more DVD shopping lists in the backlog to publish, so stay tuned for more!
